Religion and PR
Feb. 4th, 2008 12:17 pmI have been confused by religion recently. This should not come as a surprise to those who know me. I recently have been trying to understand religion from a logical perspective and failing. As far as I can tell every religion I look into seems to label me as the antagonist of said religion. I am ok with this because it makes religious discussions for me easy. They usually go something like this.
Person A: God/Gods say I should not do X.
Me: Why? I mean by not doing X you are simply limiting all the goals that you state you are in favor of? Not to mention causing your self actual pain and discomfort.
Person A: Well what is your religion that way I can make a comparison.
Me: I don't have one
Person A: O' so your atheist?
Me: No, I don't have a religion.
Person A: Then how do you answer the big questions, where do you get your morals from?
Me: Logically, and it has been scientifically proven that I really don't have morals.
Person A: Then you would not understand, and I am sorry you will end up in hell(insert other form of hell like place) when you die.
So in an effort to prove that I am not that evil I have been trying to figure out why religions seem to fail in teaching practitioners logic that supports their religion?
For example: Does your religion discriminate against X(for this example I will use gays) group?
Person A(No PR training): No. Gay people are breaking Gods laws it says so in the bible. It's not discriminating because they are sinning.
Person B(Same religion as Person A, but with PR training): Currently. Religion is a tradition and traditions take time to change. Only by being an active member of the religion can you help influence this change for the better.
I find most people seem to argue their religion more in line with person A then with person B. Honestly, I don't think I know a person who argues their religion like person B above. I am really trying to figure out why this is, anyone know?
