Honestly part of it has to do with the "romance" of vampires, and also the ease of use of the system. Character gen for white wolf is so easy, and the vampire tends to be the easiest introduction to that.
There is an EMO element, don't get me wrong, but vampires tend to appeal to women more than mages.
